Next Generation Science Standards: For States, By States - NGSS Resources

Dimension 1: Science & Engineering Practices

NGSS's emphasis is on providing students with opportunities to embrace the practices of science and engineering. "Engaging learners in ways that will stimulate their curiosity and creativity will also allow them to better understand the work of scientists and engineers." (Marjorie A. Porter, 2017)

Dimension 2: Crosscutting Concepts

The crosscutting concepts (identified below) are used to encourage and support the unity of all sciences. They are embedded in science activities at every level, and they communicate a scientific way of thinking. They are themes that bridge disciplinary boundaries.

  • Patterns
  • Cause and effect
  • Scale, proportion, and quantity
  • Systems and system models
  • Energy and matter
  • Structure and function
  • Stability and change

Dimension 3: Disciplinary Core Ideas (DCI) / Content

The DCI's are broken into four categories: Life Sciences (LS), Physical Science (PS). Earth and Space Science (ESS), and Engineering and Technology Science (ETS). The following website, "Nextgenscience.org" will provide specific content for your grade level.

Phenomenon (4th Dimension) : "Don't Kill the Wonder" Resources

Paul Andersen ("Bozeman Science") has created a video for every science standard.

"Don't kill the wonder - and don't hide the practices."
